The London Fott Office.—A post office in any great city is a miniature world, but a scene is rarely witnessed elsewhere like that occurring daily at the London office during the half hour before six P. M., when the northern mail closes. A letter iu the Harverhill Publiaher describes it: “All London is astir to get ready for this mail, and if standing in the passage way you will ob serve that the hurry and bustle commences a lull half hour before six o’clock. At this time a squad of policemen quietly take their places in the long hall to preserve order. Mail matter is received at a large window, in the side of the passage, and upon its sill one of the employes of the office is mounted. The long procession of merchants, porters, boys, women, with huge bun dles of newspapers, letters, packages of all sorts and sizes, pass along the hall and thrust their burdens in at the window. The large mosaics, eighteen feet in height, which adorn St. Peter’s, have someof them cost twenty-five years of the labor of several artists. It seems to me that, rather than undertake so endless and un productive a task, I would be the slave ol a silver mine—and yet the perfection of the work is won derful. At a little distance it is impossible to tell it from an oil painting, and it is next to inde structible.
